BARB Search & Rescue

BARB Search & Rescue, founded in 1992 as Burnham Area Rescue Boat, is an independent charity run by a dedicated team of local volunteers.

About Us

BARB Search & Rescue was founded in 1992 as Burnham Area Rescue Boat, and over three decades our dedicated team of local volunteers has saved hundreds of lives along the Somerset coastline.

We operate two rescue hovercraft and two inshore rescue boats, and we’re on call 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Our crew meet weekly at their seafront station to train and keep their life-saving equipment in top condition — always ready to respond at a moment’s notice.

Not a single person involved with BARB receives any payment for their work. Every pound donated goes directly towards keeping our rescue service operational. As an independent charity, we rely entirely on the generosity of the public to keep saving lives.
